Meet John McAvoy, the former criminal who is aiming to become the world’s best long-distance triathlete. Buying his first weapon - a sawn-off shot gun - at the age of 16, he was behind bars for the first of two jail terms just after his 18th birthday for his involvement in an armed robbery.

John will recount his story for us and go in to detail about how sport has changed his world. More included in the summary below but we hope you can join us for an incredible evening hosted by Rockets & Rascals. There will be nibbles and drinks to purchase plus a raffle. All funds and proceeds will go to support youth development in sport right here in Dorset.
His uncle Mick McAvoy was one of the masterminds of the Brink's-Mat robbery in which £26 million worth of gold bullion, diamonds and cash stolen from a warehouse near Heathrow Airport in 1983, while his stepfather is serving a life sentence for armed robbery. During his second stint in prison, he was deemed such a risk that he was put in a high-security unit with the radical cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri, who was later extradited to the United States and found guilty of 11 terrorism charges in a New York court.

Also in that unit were the four men, who attempted bomb attacks on London's transport system in July 2005. "It was probably at that point, I realized quite the degree of trouble I was in," he recalls. More info available in his latest book "From Ironbars to Ironman" available from Amazon.
